AIDS Action is offering internship opportunities to current undergrad or graduate students who seek experience in HIV-related public policy and government affairs. Selected individuals will work with staff in numerous roles, including researching a variety of public health and civil rights issues related to HIV prevention, treatment and care; attending Congressional hearings and coalition meetings; monitoring voting records; reviewing the federal register and Congressional Record; preparation of briefing materials, correspondence, and mailings; and general office administration.

We are looking for candidates with strong research, writing, and organizational skills and a willingness to work in a professional office. Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment is critical. Familiarity with HIV-related issues and the legislative processes is preferred, but in no way essential. People of color, women, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals, and HIV-positive individuals are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Requirements
Must have completed at least two semesters of college, be a current undergrad or graduate student attending school in the U.S., commit to completing 10 consecutive weeks of service, begin internship between May 26 and June 16, 2008.

Complete applications must include a cover letter indicating areas of interest, resume, three to four page writing sample and an essay (not to exceed three pages) answering the following questions

  • Describe your participation in any school, work, or extracurricular activities related to HIV, public policy, and outreach/education (i.e. peer prevention programs, volunteer activities, etc.).
  • Why would you be the best candidate for the internship (i.e. what do you bring to the organization)?
  • How would you use the skills you acquire from this internship?
