CDC HIV/AIDS Reported Cases in 2006 Report
WASHINGTON,
Mar. 28, 2008 -- The newly released 2006 numbers of 52,878 reported HIV
infection cases (45 states) and 39,002 reported AIDS cases (50 states)
continues the CDC’s pattern of underreporting numbers by not including
all states in their count, and doing so in a manner that is confusing
and makes year-to-year comparisons difficult. In the 27th
year of the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, we still await the long-promised
revised HIV incidence estimates to be released. The number of HIV
and AIDS cases remains high year to year, particularly as funding for
HIV prevention shrinks. The lack of adequate estimates on those living
with HIV in this country is also a barrier in determining the
appropriate level of funding needed for care and treatment. This
latest data, showing level reporting by states with mature HIV
reporting systems, and the addition of over 18,000 HIV cases from just
six states, magnifies the need for the next President to create a National AIDS Strategy
with measurable outcomes, timelines and adequate funding for
prevention, treatment and research. Without a coordinated federal
response based on accurate data, we can never hope to end the AIDS
epidemic in America.
