AIDS Action Statement on New Data on Rates of HIV Diagnoses and Syphilis Infections Among Gay Men. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just released an analysis of data of new HIV diagnoses and new syphilis infections among gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). The new analysis compares the data for gay and bisexual men and MSM with HIV and syphilis rates of other men and of women. The data analysis, which was presented on March 10th at the CDC’s 2010 National STD Prevention Conference, shows that the rate of new HIV diagnoses among gay men and other MSM is more than 44 times higher than the rate among other men and more than 40 times higher than the rate among women. The rate of new syphilis infections among gay men and other MSM was also 46 times higher than the comparable rates among other men. |

AIDS Action Applauds Congress for Historic End to Twenty Year Ban on the Use of Federal Funds for Syringe Exchange. The Senate, in a 57 – 35 vote on a six bill appropriations “minibus,” agreed to end the ban on the use of federal funds for syringe exchange. Additionally, they agreed to allow Washington D.C. to use its own local funds for syringe exchange and to use federal funding under the same conditions as other jurisdictions. |

AIDS Action Statement on President Obama’s FY 2011 Budget Request. In a time of fiscal constraint, consistent with his support for a comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy, President Obama identified nearly $80 million in increases for HIV/AIDS care, treatment, and prevention services in his budget request for FY 2011, which was released on Monday, February 1. |
